boston-thurmond united community center Winston-Salem, NC | 2025

a centuries-old store revived as a community gathering space

Originally constructed in 1972 as a Model City child care center - part of President Lyndon Johnson’s “Great Society” initiative - this historical structure had been vacant for years before being purchased by community nonprofit Boston-Thurmond United.

Reconfigured interiors, a shaded patio with custom pergola, a picnic shelter, and a garage provide spaces for nonprofit leaders to gather and build community.
